What's the story

Neville Tata, son of Noel Tata and half nephew of Ratan Tata, has been inducted into the board of Sir Dorabji Tata Trusts (SDTT). At just 32 years old, he is now one of the youngest trustees on the board. The SDTT is the largest among several philanthropic entities established by the Tata Group. It owns a significant 27.98% stake in Tata Sons, which serves as the holding company for the $300 billion conglomerate.

Family legacy

Noel was appointment Chairman of Tata Trusts after Ratan's death

Neville's induction comes just over a year after his father, Noel, was appointed as the chairman of Tata Trusts. The appointment came just two days after Ratan's demise in October 2024. Under Noel's leadership, the trusts have been embroiled in disagreements over the appointment of nominee directors on the board of Tata Sons.

Professional journey

Neville's career at Tata Group

Neville has been associated with the JRD Tata Trust and the Tata Social Welfare Trust. He joined Trent, Tata Group's fashion and retail arm, in 2016. Since then, he has worked across various verticals including packaged foods division and fast fashion brand Zudio. In 2024, he was appointed as the head of Star, Trent's supermarket business.

Board expansion

Bhaskar Bhat also appointed as trustee

Along with Neville, Bhaskar Bhat has also been appointed as a trustee on the SDTT board. Both appointments are for a period of three years, effective November 12. Bhat is a former CEO of Titan Co. Ltd and has played a key role in expanding the Tata group company into various categories like jewelry, perfumes, and sarees. The SDTT board has also appointed Venu Srinivasan, chairman of TVS Motor, as a trustee for three years.
