Jindal Steel, in partnership with the CSIR-Central Road Research Institute (CSIR-CRRI), has bagged a Guinness World Record for building the world's longest road made entirely of processed steel slag aggregates. The record-breaking feat was achieved in Raigarh, Chhattisgarh. The 1.85-km-long four-lane road was built using some two lakh tons of processed steel slag, a by-product of the steel manufacturing process.

Naveen Jindal, Chairman of Jindal Steel, emphasized the achievement as a testament to how science, technology, and industry can convert industrial co-products into valuable resources for nation-building.
He stressed that India's growth should be driven by innovation that creates economic value while safeguarding the environment.

Scientifically processed steel slag offers cost-effectiveness and durability compared to traditional road materials.
The steel slag roads are 30-40% more cost-effective and can last up to three times longer than standard bitumen roads, reducing repair and maintenance needs.
Their strength makes them suitable for diverse climate conditions, from coastal regions to rugged terrains.
Future prospects
Steel slag generation expected to reach 60M tons
Steel slag generation is expected to reach 60 million tons in the coming years, owing to the capacity expansion of Indian steel plants.
These plants are targeting a production capacity of 300 million tons by 2030-31.
The Steel Ministry is promoting steel slag road technology and working with the Ministry of Science & Technology and the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways for large-scale industrial by-product utilization.
