Delhi: 22-year-old murders 12-year-old, dumps body in drain

The decomposed body of a 12-year-old boy, who had been missing for days, was found in a drain in Delhi's Karawal area, police said. The boy was murdered, his body was stuffed into a sack, and dumped in a drain. Locals discovered and identified the boy. The main accused, a 22-year-old man identified as Havender alias Nanhe, was arrested on Friday. Here's what happened.

Family approached police after boy went missing weeks ago

The boy was missing since March 11. His mother had gone to visit a few relatives and couldn't find her son after returning. The family members searched for the boy in the locality but to no avail. Subsequently, a police complaint was registered on March 12 at Karawal Nagar police station. Police interrogated the locals, including Nanhe, who was one of the suspects.

Police searched for the boy in UP

After interrogation didn't help in the probe, police considered different angles. They searched for the boy in neighboring districts of Uttar Pradesh but didn't succeed. Meanwhile, locals found the body floating in a drain and informed the police. "The boy's leg was popping out of the sack. A local resident spotted it and alerted the police," the boy's father reportedly said.

Nanhe took the boy to an eatery, then his house

Once the body was found, police re-summoned Nanhe. On sustained interrogation, he broke down and accepted the crime. Nanhe told police he ran into the boy on March 11. He took the victim to an eatery, where he informed him he didn't have money to pay the bill. He then asked the boy to accompany him to his house and the latter agreed.

Boy informed his sister that he was going with Nanhe

Before leaving with Nanhe, the boy went to his home and informed his sister about it. But he didn't return. Atul Kumar Thakur, the deputy commissioner of police (north-east), said Nanhe intended to extract money from the boy's parents under the pretext of finding him. To ward off any suspicion, Nanhe even looked for the boy with locals.

Police have sent the body for autopsy

Nanhe was charged with murder and kidnapping. Police have also sent the boy's body for autopsy to confirm if he was sexually assaulted.
