Delhi HC refuses to delay '120 Bahadur' release
What's the story
The Delhi High Court has dismissed a plea seeking to stall the release of Farhan Akhtar's upcoming war drama, 120 Bahadur. The petition had claimed that the film, based on real events from the 1962 Sino-Indian War, distorts historical facts. However, the court allowed its release on Friday, November 21, after noting it was too late for any last-minute changes.
Legal proceedings
Court's decision amid ongoing debate over film's accuracy
A bench of Justices Prathiba M Singh and Shail Jain disposed of the petition. The court said, "However, since there is some ambiguity as to whether names of all the 120 soldiers have been mentioned or not, it is directed that the film is permitted to be released in theaters as it is on Friday across the country."
Future adjustments
Petitioners can suggest changes for OTT release
The court further said that the petitioners could watch the movie and check if any changes are needed. If so, these should be made for the film's over-the-top (OTT) release. "It is made clear that even for the OTT release, only the names of the soldiers along with the proper regiment will be mentioned," said the bench.
Film details
The film's portrayal of the Battle of Rezang La
120 Bahadur depicts Major Shaitan Singh Bhati, who received the Param Vir Chakra for his bravery in the 1962 Battle of Rezang La. His unit, consisting mostly of Ahir soldiers from Rewari and nearby areas, defended the Rezang La Pass, Chushul airfield's first line of defense. The petitioners alleged that the film distorts historical truth by glorifying Major Shaitan Singh as a lone hero under a fictional name 'Bhati,' played by Akhtar.
Title rationale
Akhtar's explanation for the film's title
Akhtar had previously explained why he named the film 120 Bahadur. He said, "If I just wanted to make a film on Major Shaitan Singh Bhati PVC, then I would have kept the title Shaitan Singh." "That would have been the easiest thing. There wouldn't have been any controversy. Everyone would have said that a film is being made on Shaitan Singh Ji." "But this film is about the whole company. That's why we have named it 120 Bahadur."
