What's the story

The Maddock Horror Comedy Universe (MHCU) has surpassed the earnings of Rohit Shetty's Copverse (cop universe) at the box office. The MHCU was officially launched with the trailer of Aditya Sarpotdar's vampire comedy Thamma, which released this Diwali and has since earned over ₹205 crore globally. This takes its total to over ₹1,500 crore at the worldwide box office, beating Copverse's ₹1,411 crore haul.

Universe evolution

This is how the Maddock horror comedy universe looks like

The MHCU's journey began with Amar Kaushik's 2018 film Stree, starring Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor. It was followed by Kaushik's 2022 creature comedy Bhediya, featuring Varun Dhawan. The universe continued with Sarpotdar's Munjya last year and Kaushik's Stree 2, which became the highest-grossing Hindi film at the domestic box office. Meanwhile, the Copverse is India's oldest film universe, having been running since Singham in 2011, although it was announced only in 2018 with Simmba. Another entry is Sooryavanshi.

Comparison

How does MHCU fare against other cinematic universes?

Despite the success of the MHCU, it still has a long way to go before it can surpass the YRF Spy Universe, which has a total worldwide box office haul of over ₹3,000 crore. It was launched with Siddharth Anand's 2023 blockbuster Pathaan and includes the War franchise, Anand's War (2019), Ayan Mukerji's War 2, and the Tiger franchise, Kabir Khan's Ek Tha Tiger (2012), Ali Abbas Zafar's Tiger Zinda Hai (2017), and Maneesh Sharma's Tiger 3 (2023).
