Amazon Prime to stream 'Dune' in India from March 25
Viewers in India who missed out on the theatrical show of Denis Villeneuve's Dune will finally be able to watch it, thanks to Amazon Prime Video. The digital platform will start streaming the sci-fi film from March 25. Apart from English, Dune will be available in Hindi, Tamil Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam. To recall, Dune—certified UA by the CBFC—hit theaters in India last October.
On Wednesday, Amazon Prime Video wrote in an announcement, "It's time we took you for a ride around planet Arrakis in search of some spice." To note, Prime Video isn't the sole OTT platform to host Dune. The film was released on HBO Max last year. Since the platform is unavailable in India, Dune was not present in the streaming space here till now.
Reports say that Dune will hit HBO Max again on March 10. So, releasing it just before the 94th Academy Awards ceremony on March 28—for which the film has bagged 10 nominations—on both the streaming giants looks like a profitable move by the makers. Dune has a starry cast comprising Timothée Chalamet, Marvel alum Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, and Josh Brolin, among others.
Backed by Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros, the first part of Dune had grossed over $400 million worldwide and the 155-minute-long movie was made on a humongous budget of $165 million. While describing the movie, Villeneuve had said in a statement, "To me, Dune is a psychological thriller, an adventure, a war movie, a coming-of-age movie. It is even a love story."
A sequel to Dune was announced in October 2021. While announcing it, Legendary Pictures had written, "This is only the beginning...Thank you to those who have experienced @dunemovie so far, those who are going in the days and weeks ahead. We're excited to continue the journey!" The sequel will be released in October 2023 and Florence Pugh is likely to join the cast, too.
