What's the story

The recent press day for Apple TV saw questions about a potential sequel to the record-breaking sports film, F1. When asked if a follow-up was in the works, Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali teased an affirmative response. "Stay tuned," he said during a session with Apple's SVP of Services Eddie Cue at Santa Monica's Barker Hanger.

Quality assurance

'We need to digest the success': Domenicali

Domenicali stressed the importance of delivering a high-quality sequel. "We need to digest the success of this movie. If you want to think of a new one, it has to be very good," he added. The original F1 film not only topped global box office charts with over $631 million in earnings but also became Brad Pitt's highest-grossing movie and Apple Original Films's top theatrical release so far.

Unexpected triumph

Original film's success exceeded expectations, says Domenicali

Domenicali expressed his surprise at the film's success, stating it allowed Formula 1 to be discussed in a new dimension akin to Hollywood. "That F1 would be able to be talked about in another dimension like Hollywood, we didn't think was possible," he said. The film was distributed and co-marketed by Warner Bros.

Apple to stream F1 races for subscribers

During the press day, Cue and Domenicali also discussed Apple's new partnership with F1 to stream the sport without any additional cost to subscribers. Cue highlighted how this collaboration would provide a single platform for fans to watch all F1 content, including qualifying races and post-race analyses. He promised that Apple would leverage its resources, like Apple Maps and Apple Music, to enhance the fan experience during this exciting time.
