China pauses Japanese film releases after political spat
China has put the brakes on several Japanese movies, like "Crayon Shin-chan the Movie: Super Hot! Scorching Kasukabe Dancers" and "Cells at Work!", following a spike in tensions with Japan.
The move comes after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi suggested Japan might respond militarily if China attacked Taiwan—a comment that didn't sit well with Beijing.
What's happening behind the scenes
After Takaichi's remarks, China issued a travel warning for Japan and its Premier did not plan to meet with her at the G20 summit.
Chinese state media says local audiences are upset by the comments, and pulling Japanese films is meant to reflect that mood.
Meanwhile, Japanese business leaders are urging both sides to talk things out, pointing out that stable politics are key for both countries' economic exchange.
