Comedian Maheep Singh's show cancelled amid threats
Stand-up comic Maheep Singh had to call off his Dehradun show after a group labeled his jokes "vulgar" and threatened the venue—even though they hadn't seen his act.
Singh explained in a video that the protestors were influential and used religious references, making the organizers feel unsafe about going ahead with the event.
Controversial jokes and online backlash
Singh's viral line—"Yaar teri mummy na okay okay hai, matlab aisi nahi hai jaisa suna tha. Par jaisi bhi hai na, kal tak ghar ajayegi, theek hai?"—got mixed reactions online. Some laughed it off, but others called it offensive.
Things escalated after he replied to someone with, "Mar gaya to teri maa vidhva ho jaegi," which drew even more criticism.
While these remarks were criticized, the protests were more broadly about claims of vulgarity in his comedy.
Singh's career and impact of controversy
Singh kicked off his stand-up journey in 2013 and even won Comedy Central's Best Standup Comedian alongside Zakir Khan.
He started New Delhi Comedy Club and has appeared on India's Got Latent.
But now, thanks to this backlash, organizers are dropping his shows—not just affecting him but also making things tougher for other comics trying to book gigs.
