With Shahid Kapoor delivering his career's biggest solo in Kabir Singh, the coveted Avengers series coming to an end with its final installment Endgame, and Joaquin Phoenix's chilling portrayal of supervillain Joker, 2019 was clearly a year of movies. On Wednesday, as Google released its most trending topics/events for 2019, these films were naturally at the top. Take a look.
Shahid Kapoor's much-talked-about 'Kabir Singh' trended the most
Sandeep Vanga's Hindi remake of his own 2017 Telugu blockbuster, Kabir Singh is the most searched movie of the year. Although the movie was widely slammed by critics, who cited it problematic due to its nods to toxic masculinity and misogyny, it went on to become one of the highest grossing Hindi movies of all time, with a worldwide collection of Rs. 379 crore.
Three Hollywood biggies followed the list
Marvel Studios' much-anticipated fourth part in the Avengers series, Avengers: Endgame was the second most searched movie. The film, that bid goodbye to iconic Marvel heroes like Iron Man, became the highest-grossing film ever, beating the previous record-holder Avatar. The third position was grabbed by Todd Phillips' chillingly dark psychological thriller Joker, that portrays the origin story of DC Comics' wicked supervillain Arthur Fleck/Joker.
'Captain Marvel' grabbed the fourth position
Another Marvel flick that made it to the Top 10 list was Captain Marvel, starring Brie Larson in the titular role. It was the first ever female-led Marvel Cinematic Universe film, and went on to earn a massive $1 billion at the global box office.
'Super 30', 'Mission Mangal', 'Gully Boy' also among most searched
Captain Marvel was followed by Hrithik Roshan's comeback movie Super 30, based on the life of noted mathematician Anand Kumar. Further, Akshay Kumar-starrer Mission Mangal, inspired by India's Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) emerged as the sixth most-searched movie of the year. On No. 7 was Zoya Akhtar's much-lauded musical drama Gully Boy, which is also India's official entry to the Oscars 2020.
'War' and 'Uri' also found a place in the list
Siddharth Anand's action thriller movie War, starring Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff in the lead was the 8th most trending movie on Google. It is also the highest grossing Indian film of 2019.
