'Hobbs & Shaw' takes on superhero genre with new trailer
Hobbs & Shaw is the spin-off movie belonging to the Fast & Furious franchise. It is releasing on August 2, 2019, and recently dropped its first trailer. The spin-off reunites Dwayne Johnson's Luke Hobbs, a tough American agent, and Jason Statham's Deckard Shaw, a formidable mercenary. Both characters were introduced in previous Fast & Furious movies. Check out the action-packed, star-powered trailer here.
Idris Elba plays Brixton, an agent with literal superpowers. Having undergone genetic engineering, he is apparently bulletproof and is superhuman. Hobbs and Shaw are brought in to put together their resourcefulness to stop Brixton at any cost. However, they find themselves entering a war they had not bargained for, with a villain who just might beat both of them, despite their combined strengths.
What stood out in the trailer is how Johnson and Statham bring back the classic action movie vibes, with plain old muscle and fighting scenes. Their conversations exude a buddy cop vibe, with neither losing any opportunity to poke fun at the other. The fight sequences and stunts are delightfully over the top, and the movie embraces the action genre completely and unashamedly.
The Fast & Furious franchise has come a long way. What started as a group of underground racers, turned into an elite global unit engaging in vehicular warfare. The new film kicks it up a notch, perhaps entering the superhero genre.
The spin-off is being helmed by David Leitch who is quickly becoming one of Hollywood's top action movie directors. He already has notable films like John Wick, Atomic Blonde and Deadpool 2 to his name. Leitch's clever visual style, a love for neon and an easygoing idea of fun movies promise to make the upcoming Hobbs & Shaw a treat for action lovers.
