Deepak Chopra to Anurag Kashyap: Indians mentioned in Epstein files
What's the story
The US Department of Justice has released a significant number of emails, court documents, victim testimonies, third-party recollections, photos, and videos related to five different cases involving the disgraced financier and sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. These documents have drawn attention to several Indian-origin public figures. Notably, Deepak Chopra (wellness guru), Mira Nair (filmmaker), Anurag Kashyap (director), Nandita Das (actor-director), and Anil Ambani (businessman) are among those mentioned in the Epstein Files.
Chopra's involvement
Deepak Chopra
The wellness guru was mentioned in the Epstein files for his multiple meetings with Epstein, even after the latter's 2008 conviction. Their emails discussed Marla Maples (Donald Trump's second wife) and a sexual abuse lawsuit by a minor. One such email reads, "Did she also drop the civil case against you?" to which Epstein replied, "YuP," and Chopra responded, "Good." Their communication continued at least until 2018, per WION.
Filmmakers mentioned
Mira Nair and Anurag Kashyap
Filmmaker Nair was also mentioned in the Files. She and Epstein were at the same party on December 21, 2009, which was attended by Bill Clinton, Jeff Bezos, and Jean Pigoni. Director Kashyap's name came up in an email exchange between Epstein and others like Giuseppe Bersani, Gino Yu, and Ornella Corazza. They were supposedly gathering for a Congress in Shanghai where Kashyap was referred to as "A famous Bollywood Director" who was in attendance.
Other mentions
Nandita Das and Anil Ambani
Actor-director Das was invited as a speaker at the Lake District Festival in England, where Epstein was also invited by Jem Bendell. Ambani was mentioned most among Indians in the Epstein files. In 2019, they discussed a meeting in New York and Ambani sought financial assistance from Epstein. The latter advised him to put his assets in shell companies and declare bankruptcy. However, it should be noted that being mentioned in these documents doesn't connect the celebrities to any wrongdoing.
