Kerala HC steps in as CBFC demands big cuts to Shane Nigam's 'Haal'
The Kerala High Court has directed the filmmakers of the Malayalam film Haal to resubmit the film to the censor board (CBFC) for review, after the board ordered 15 cuts—including scenes with beef biryani and a burqa dance—citing religious sensitivities.
The film only got an "A" certificate, so it's for adults only.
Director Veeraa pushes back against censorship
Director Veeraa called the board's cuts "unjustified and excessive," saying, "CBFC wants the new generation to not be influenced by the message we are conveying via our movie. They are clearly afraid of it."
He insists the film should release only after court approval.
Part of a bigger debate on creative freedom
Haal isn't alone—other Malayalam films like Phule have also faced scrutiny for their themes.
Many see this as part of a growing trend where creative voices in regional cinema are being challenged by ideological censorship.
