Who is Masoom Minawala, Indian content creator who made history?
One of the earliest influencers or content creators in India, Masoom Minawala Mehta, made history at the ongoing Milan Fashion Week by becoming the first-ever Indian creator to walk the runway as a showstopper. What's more, she walked for Vaishali S—the first Indian female designer to showcase a collection at the much-coveted event. While Minawala trends for her feat, here's all about her.
Before establishing herself as a blogger, Minawala had founded a start-up at only 19. She used to sell shoes imported from China but sadly, the business failed in just a year. Hailing from a family of jewelers in Mumbai, the influencer has a diploma in Fashion Styling from the University of the Arts London. In 2016, she married Antwerp-based diamond merchant, Shailin Mehta.
Initially, Minawala set up a fashion portal called Miss Style Fiesta, where she would give tips on current trends and fashion inputs. With the boom of social media, she started vlogging, gaining heavy traffic on various platforms. Currently, she enjoys over 1.2 million followers on Instagram, with a team of 15 full-time employees working to manage the Masoom Minawala brand online.
One can understand the scale of her global reach from the fact she has collaborated with over 500 brands across the globe till now. Moreover, Minawala is an active angel investor in many early-stage start-ups and had also launched an initiative aimed at supporting female entrepreneurs, Empowher. Another one of her initiatives is the not-for-profit campaign #SupportIndianDesigners that was started during the COVID-19 pandemic.
While her career graph proves the content creator is ahead of her time, Minawala's efforts to democratize fashion continue. She's currently hosting a self-produced social media-exclusive reality series called Masoom Takes Fashion Week. Uploading informative videos on Instagram/YouTube, Minawala has also been sharing the inside details of Milan and Paris Fashion Weeks. Notably, this marked her fourth consecutive attendance at the Milan Fashion Week.
