The family of late Major Mohit Sharma has filed a petition in the Delhi High Court, seeking an immediate stay on the release of Dhurandhar, reported Bar and Bench. The petition alleges that the film draws heavily from Major Sharma's life, covert operations, and martyrdom without any consent from either his legal heirs or the Indian Army. Notably, Major Sharma operated undercover as Iftikhar Bhatt to infiltrate the Hizbul Mujahideen in the early 2000s.

'Dhurandhar' filmmakers allegedly didn't consult Sharma's family
The petition argues that while media reports and social media speculate that Dhurandhar draws from Major Sharma's life, the filmmakers have neither acknowledged this nor reached out to the family. It further states that a martyr "is not a commercial commodity" and that no one should recreate a soldier's life for profit without truth, dignity, and proper consent. The court is expected to hear the case next week.

Family seeks private screening of 'Dhurandhar'
The petitioners have named the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Additional Directorate General of Public Information (ADGPI), the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), director and co-producer Aditya Dhar, and producer Jio Studios as respondents. They have urged the court to halt Dhurandhar's release and allow Major Sharma's family to view the film privately before it is made public. The family is being represented by advocates Roopenshu Pratap Singh and Manish Sharma from Samaanta Law Firm (SLF).

Meanwhile, earlier this week, Dhar clarified that the film is not about Major Sharma. He wrote on X, "Our film Dhurandhar is not based on the life of braveheart Major Mohit Sharma AC(P) SM. This is an official clarification." "I assure you, if we do make a biopic on Mohit sir in the future, we will do it with full consent and in complete consultation with the family..."

Dhurandhar, directed by Dhar, is a military-themed action thriller. The film stars Ranveer Singh in the lead role, with R Madhavan, Akshaye Khanna, Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Rampal and Sara Arjun in pivotal roles. So far, the makers have released two tracks, and the movie is set to release on December 5.
