What's the story

The Maharashtra Cultural Affairs Department and Film City are set to revive the iconic ND Studios in Karjat, reported PTI. The initiative will include residential training modules, a scriptwriter lab, and modern art post-production facilities, reported officials. The studio hit headlines in August 2023 after celebrated art director Nitin Desai, who created sets for Lagaan and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, reportedly died by suicide at its Raigad facility.

Revitalization plan

ND Studios to be transformed into a 'center of excellence'

Senior officials recently toured the studio and unveiled a plan to revive it as a tribute to its founder, Desai. The government's master plan, outlined by Cultural Affairs Secretary Kiran Kulkarni and Film City MD Swati Mhase Patil, seeks to turn the "silence of Karjat" into a thriving "center of excellence." The revival plan includes launching a scriptwriter lab in January, a Marathi content mentoring program, and residential training modules for emerging artists.

Collaboration

ND Studios to sign MOUs with FTII for certified training

New preview theaters and state-of-the-art post-production facilities are also part of the plan. It also envisions "Fame Tours" and immersive experiences to draw international visitors and boost the studio's profile. Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) will be signed with the renowned Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) to conduct certified training courses. This initiative aims to bridge the gap between talent and industry requirements. Kulkarni emphasized, "We are not just spectators; we are active partners in fulfilling Nitin Desai's vision."

Studio resilience

ND Studios continues to thrive despite restoration

The studio is currently being restored, with damaged sets and essential amenities being upgraded. Despite ongoing work, it remains an active space. The film Keshri Veer was recently shot here, and the iconic Kaun Banega Crorepati sets continue to showcase the studio's grandeur. To mark this new chapter, a grand carnival will be held from December 25-31, inviting the public to witness its revival.
