Who all won Padma Shri from film industry?
The Padma Awards 2020 were announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, on Saturday, January 25. Out of the 141 total recipients, six personalities from the film industry were honored with the Padma Shri. They include filmmakers Karan Johar and Ekta Kapoor, actor Kangana Ranaut, singers Suresh Wadkar and Adnan Sami, and veteran television actress Sarita Joshi. Here are more details.
Johar is the head honcho of Dharma Productions
Son of producer Yash Johar, Karan Johar, is the head honcho of Dharma Productions. He made his directorial debut with the 1998 film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. He has directed popular movies like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001), Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006), My Name Is Khan (2010), among others. Johar's Dharma Productions has also produced films like Wake Up Sid, Agneepath, and Raazi.
Overwhelmed by so many emotions, Johar said
"It's not very often that I'm at a loss of words," Johar said in a statement on Twitter. "Overwhelmed by so many emotions right now. Humbled, elated and also thankful for the opportunity to live my dream everyday, to create and to entertain. I know my father would be proud and I wish he was here to share this moment with me," he added.

The daughter of veteran actor Jeetendra and producer Shobha Kapoor, Ekta Kapoor (44), is best known for producing soap operas such as Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii. She launched her production banner Balaji Telefilms in 1994. She has also produced movies like Love Sex Aur Dhokha, Shor in the City, Ragini MMS, The Dirty Picture, and Udta Punjab.
I hope to continue breaking boundaries, Ekta said
"My foray into the industry started when I was just 17. Through the years I've realised it's never 'too soon' to live out your dreams and being 'too young' is probably the best thing," Ekta tweeted. "I hope to continue breaking boundaries...and to strive to give back to the country for all the love that's come my way," she added.

Kangana, only Bollywood actor to receive Padma Shri this year
The only Bollywood actor to receive the Padma Shri this year is Kangana Ranaut. Kangana (32) made her acting debut with Anurag Basu's Gangster (2006). She has acted in films like Fashion, Tanu Weds Manu, Queen, and Panga (2020). She has previously received many accolades, including three National Film Awards. "I'm thankful to the Indian government," Kangana said after the announcement of the award.
Suresh Wadkar and Adnani Sami also got Padma Shri
Veteran singer Suresh Wadkar (64), who started his career back in 1978, is known for tracks like Aye zindagi gale lagaa le, Aur is dil mein, Pardesi pardesi, Sapne mein, and Jag ja, among others. On the other hand, London-born Adnan Sami (now an Indian citizen), is a renowned singer, musician, composer, pianist, and actor, who released several popular albums in the early 2000s.
Overwhelmed with infinite gratitude, Adnan Sami tweeted
"The greatest moment for any artiste is to be appreciated and recognised by his/her government. I am overwhelmed with infinite gratitude for being honoured with the Padma Shri by the Government of India. It has been a 34 years musical journey," Adnan tweeted.
I'm very happy and humbled: Sarita Joshi
Further, actress Sarita Joshi (78) told PTI, "I am very happy and humbled with this honour. I am working from an early age, I have never worked for awards, for me work is worship." "I've always worked from heart and given my best in whatever I've done. I will be known as Padma Shri Sarita Joshi, this is such a big honour," she added.
Padma Shri is the fourth highest civilian award in India
This year, the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in India, has been awarded to a total of 118 personalities from a range of fields such as art, literature and education, medicine, trade and industry, sports, public affairs, social work, and science and engineering. Meanwhile, the Padma Bhushan has been conferred to 16 personalities, and the Padma Vibhushan to 7 personalities across fields.
