The moniker ‘Czarina of Indian television' is not far off when it comes to Ektaa Kapoor. The only thing it lacks is that it doesn’t take into account her big-screen credentials. In a male-dominated industry, she became one of the driving forces that determined what made the industry click. Kapoor was born on June 7, 1975, in Mumbai. She did her schooling at Bombay Scottish School and graduated from Mithibai College. At the insistence of her father, she started producing television series under the banner of Balaji Telefilms. Early success evaded her as her projects were rejected one after another until Zee TV selected her ‘Mano Ya Na Mano’ in 1995. She did not have to wait for much to taste her first success. Her 1995 series ‘Hum Paanch’ became the first of many successes that ensued. The 2000s saw Kapoor slowly conquering television with series such as ‘Kkavyanajali,’ ‘Kasamh Se,’ ‘Karam Apnaa Apnaa,’ ‘Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi,’ etc. In 2001, she made her Bollywood debut with the film ‘Kyo Kii… Main Jhuth Nahin Bolta.’ Since then she has produced films such as ‘Once Upon a Time in Mumbai,’ ‘Shor in the City,’ ‘The Dirty Picture,’ etc. She has won various accolades for her achievements. In 2020, the Government of India honored her with Padma Shri. She was also featured in Variety500 in the same year. At the 2019 Hindustan Times Business Awards, she was selected as the Business Icon of the Continent.
