X: News
Twitter is an American microblogging-style social networking platform where users can post messages called "tweets" and interact with the community by liking, retweeting, and sharing tweets. Users who haven't signed up can only read tweets and not interact with them. Interestingly, prior to April 2020, Twitter could also be accessed via SMS. Now, it is a mobile-centric application that can be accessed on a website as well. It is called a microblogging platform because the length of tweets was originally restricted to 140 characters. In 2017, the limit was doubled to 280 characters. Time-limited audio and video tweets can also be posted. Further, Twitter has earned notoriety as a microblogging service because most tweets are written by a small minority of users. As of 2019, Twitter boasted 330 million monthly active users. Following the viral success of the audio-based social networking app Clubhouse, Twitter launched a rival service known as Twitter Spaces where users could create audio-based discussion rooms called "spaces". In this format, the host and few speakers can host discussions and address several listeners. Monetization options for creators are also available on Spaces and the Twitter app.
