Om Birla: News
Om Birla is a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) politician from Rajasthan and is the 17th Speaker of the Lok Sabha. In his youth, he was active in student politics and became the President of the students’ union at Gumanpura’s Government Senior Secondary School. In 1987, Birla joined the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) and, by 1997, became the National Vice-president of the organization. In 2003, he entered the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly as a BJP candidate from the Kota South constituency by defeating Shanti Dhariwal of the INC. Birla was elected for two more terms in 2008 and 2013. In 2014, he contested the Lok Sabha elections from the Kota constituency and won, becoming a first-time Member of Parliament. He was re-elected from Kota in the 2019 General Elections and succeeded Sumitra Mahajan as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. Birla has served on the Standing Committee for Energy and has been a member of the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment.
