What's the story

Actor and entrepreneur Parul Gulati has admitted that her Goa homestay venture didn't go as planned. In a recent episode of Sharan Hegde's podcast, she revealed that her property isn't earning the expected income. "As I said on your podcast that I will charge 45k a night, reality hit me because back then there weren't so many villas," she said.

Market dynamics

Gulati's villa rents for ₹11K per night

Gulati's property, Malkin House, is a luxurious two-bedroom villa in Nerul, Goa. Despite its prime location and high-end amenities, the villa isn't fetching ₹40K per night as she had anticipated and declared on Hegde's podcast earlier.

"Over 4-5 years, there are way more properties," she admitted on the podcast. "I did not understand an off-season or a peak season very well."

Currently, the property rents for ₹11K per night.

Market challenges

Over-saturation of homestays in Goa

Gulati's experience mirrors the supply-demand imbalance in Goa's homestay market, a popular tourist destination.

Last year, the Goa government raised concerns over unregistered homestays operating from residential buildings.

BJP MLA Michael Lobo had said, "There is a growing concern among Goans regarding illegal homestays in buildings and unregistered homes and estates."

Despite heavy social media focus on Malkin House, the property has not been as profitable as the owner of Nish Hair had originally thought.
