The iconic 1981 film Umrao Jaan, starring Rekha and directed by Muzaffar Ali, is hitting the big screen again in a restored version on June 27.
Inspired by the classic novel Umrao Jaan Adaa, Ali wanted to bring its timeless story and rich emotions from the 19th century to life for a new generation.

The shoot even had its surprises: when armed locals showed up on set in Malihabad, Ali cast them as extras instead of panicking, adding realness to the film.
Thanks to restoration by India's National Film Development Corporation-National Film Archive of India under the National Film Heritage Mission, you can now catch this legendary movie's artistry on the big screen once more.
