What's the story

The upcoming adaptation of Jane Austen's classic novel, Sense and Sensibility, will be released in US theaters on September 11, 2026. The film is directed by George Oakley and features a star-studded cast including Daisy Edgar-Jones, Esme Creed-Miles, Caitriona Balfe, Frank Dillane, Herbert Nordrum, Bodhi Rae Breathnach, George MacKay, and Fiona Shaw, among others. Focus Features will distribute the film in the US while UPI will handle international distribution.

The Working Title production is based on a screenplay by Diana Reid. Set in Georgian-era England, Austen's novel follows the lives of Mr. Dashwood's second wife and their three daughters after his death leaves them in financial distress. The family moves to a small cottage where the two elder daughters seek true love from various suitors.

The new adaptation of Sense and Sensibility joins a long line of successful adaptations of Austen's works. Working Title previously collaborated with Focus on the 2005 adaptation of Pride & Prejudice which received four Oscar nominations; they also backed 2020's Emma. Meanwhile, a 1995 Sense and Sensibility film, directed by Ang Lee and starring Emma Thompson as Elinor Dashwood, received seven Oscar nominations and grossed over $134 million worldwide.
