Why 'Brand New Day' won't release in IMAX in India
What's the story
The upcoming Hollywood releases, The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, are generating a lot of buzz in India. While advance bookings for both films have opened and are selling fast, fans of the Spider-Man franchise may be disappointed to learn that the film will not be released in IMAX format. Sony Pictures India confirmed this decision via a comment on the film's trailer.
Format clash
'The film will obviously get preferential treatment...'
The decision not to release Spider-Man: Brand New Day in IMAX format has been attributed to its release timing. The film is releasing just two weeks after Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, which was shot entirely on IMAX's 70mm film cameras. A source told Bollywood Hungama, "Hence, the film will obviously get preferential treatment in the IMAX format." The Odyssey will release on July 17, followed by Brand New Day on July 30.
Box office predictions
'The Odyssey' to exclusively screen in IMAX for 3 weeks
The source added that all IMAX screens worldwide, including India, will exclusively screen The Odyssey for three weeks. "After three weeks, depending on the response, IMAX theaters will take a call on whether to retain the shows of The Odyssey or reduce them." "But if one goes by the performance of Nolan's last film, Oppenheimer (2023), in IMAX, there's a slim chance that IMAX screens would reduce the shows of The Odyssey."
Fan response
Other formats have already started selling fast
Despite the disappointment over the lack of an IMAX release, fans have already started booking tickets for Spider-Man: Brand New Day in other formats like PXL, ScreenX, 4DX, and Marco XE. The source added that these formats also "enhance the moviegoing experience." Interestingly, another Marvel film, Avengers: Doomsday, is also expected to skip an IMAX release in several markets due to its clash with Dune Part Three.
