What's the story

Actor Ananya Panday recently shared how she prepares for emotional scenes in films, and the advice from Shah Rukh Khan that transformed her approach. Speaking to Bollywood Hungama, she admitted that her earlier method was far more intense. "I used to think of the worst moments in my life, come for hair and makeup at 8am listen to Devdas music, and sit in my van crying," she said.

Intense preparation

Panday's emotional preparation for scenes

Panday added that her emotional scenes were sometimes scheduled as late as 5:00pm. She admitted, "It's not humanly possible to keep that emotion going," explaining that experience led her to adopt a different technique. "Now I'm more of a switch-on, switch-off person," she shared. While she still prepares emotionally an hour or two before a scene, she no longer draws from personal sadness.

Emotional detachment

'After some time you don't feel sad anymore'

Panday further explained her change in approach, saying, "After some time you don't feel sad anymore." "Thankfully, there aren't that many sad things. It just stops affecting you if you use it for everything." She recalled a piece of advice from Khan about dealing with loss in scenes. "He told me that when you're doing a scene where someone has died, instead of thinking about death, think about what life would be like without that person," she said.
