What's the story

In a new twist to the ongoing legal battle over late entrepreneur Sunjay Kapur's estate, his mother Rani Kapur has accused his wife Priya (Sachdev) Kapur of rushing to take control of his business affairs instead of mourning his demise. Rani's advocate also hinted at Kapur had deliberately removed Priya from a key company position two years back. The allegation was made during a recent Delhi High Court hearing on Monday.

Allegations

Priya was removed from AIPL in 2023

Rani alleged that Kapur had "kicked" Priya off the board of his company's holding firm, AIPL, linked to Sona Comstar in March 2023, per Money Control. "Something needed to be reversed," he told investors at the time. She stressed this was in stark contrast to Priya becoming Managing Director within a week of Sunjay's untimely demise in June and subsequently reclaiming her position as a director.

Will dispute

Rani questioned validity of will presented by Priya

Rani also told the court she was unaware of any will that Kapur may have written. She argued that the will presented by Priya seemed suspicious. Rani's lawyer said the document contradicted "Sunjay's lifelong acknowledgment that he owed everything to his mother," adding, "If he truly intended to leave me out, he would have said so expressly." Notably, last week, Priya's side had told the court that she had voluntarily resigned from AIPL.

Family details

Kapur's sudden demise and family background

For the unversed, Kapur tragically collapsed during a polo match in England on June 12 and reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest. He was previously married to actor Karisma Kapoor, with whom he has two children, Samaira and Kiaan. After their divorce in 2016, he tied the knot with Priya in 2017. The couple welcomed a son named Azarius Kapur together. Samaira and Kiaan have also filed a suit against Priya contesting the legitimacy of the will.
