Lok Sabha Elections were disastrous for actress Swara: Here's why

The April-May polls didn't just keep candidates busy, but also personalities who decided to join electioneering. One such celebrity was Swara Bhaskar, whose opinions on the current state of affairs in India gets her trolled almost daily. And now, the actress has revealed she lost brands and events after summer polls. She said this is why Bollywood celebrities stay quiet on important matters.

Swara campaigned for six candidates during polls

Swara had campaigned for six candidates during polls. These included Atishi Marlena, Kanhaiya Kumar, Digvijaya Singh, Amra Ram, Dilip Pandey, and Raghav Chadha. She said she was campaigning for the ethos of the Constitution. Unfortunately, all the six candidates lost, putting Swara at the receiving end of Twitter jokes. Hitting back for being called "bad omen", she tweeted the elections weren't only about her.

Not only candidates, even Swara lost something during polls

With her electioneering and social media account, Swara has quite openly talked about her political affiliations. Though this makes her a rare Bollywood celebrity, it has had repercussions too. Speaking at the poster launch of her upcoming movie Sheer Qorma at India Film Project, Swara said, "I lost four brands the day I campaigned for candidates for Lok Sabha election, lost three events."

Why should people risk their lives and careers, asked Swara

Further, the Raanjhanaa actress said she doesn't intend to put herself on a pedestal by revealing this information. But she wants to make people understand that stakes are high for celebrities. "How can we expect people with legacies or public profiles to actually risk their lives, families, careers? Why should they? We need to ask ourselves questions as a society," she said.

Celebrities are more vulnerable, explained Swara

"As public figures, you're more vulnerable to a lot of destructive negativity... If we want our public figures, people with legacies, to speak out and take responsible sides, then we have to become the society, which doesn't punish people doing that," she went on.

Her next movie focuses on an unconventional love story

Interestingly, Sheer Qorma, directed by Faraz Arif Ansari, traces the love story of two Muslim women played by Divya Dutta and Swara. At the launch, she said it was time for Bollywood celebrities to be sensitive in how they represent issues. "Just because an experience is not my own doesn't mean it's not legitimate. It's so basic, something so easy to forget," she said.
