1.36 crore voters flagged in West Bengal's draft voter list

India

West Bengal's latest draft electoral roll is out, and it's making headlines—over 1.36 crore voters have been flagged for possible errors after a major revision by the Election Commission.
Most issues came from mismatched father names identified during progeny mapping, with other discrepancies including age differences and other logical mismatches.
About 58 lakh names were also deleted due to deaths or permanently shifted status, shrinking the total voter count from 7.66 crore to around 7.08 crore.

Why should you care?

If you're eligible to vote in West Bengal, this update could affect whether your name is on the list—or not.
The process uses "progeny mapping" (linking new voters to relatives from the 2002 roll) and "self-mapping" (for those already listed).
If your details are flagged or missing, you can file claims or objections until January 15, 2025.
As CEO Manoj Kumar Agarwal put it, software sometimes misses legal name changes—so field checks will help sort things out fairly for everyone before election time.
