What's the story

In a major counter-terrorism operation in Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur district, two Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terrorists were neutralized. The operation, codenamed "KIYA," was launched on February 3 based on specific intelligence inputs from the Jammu and Kashmir Police. The operation targeted a cave hideout in the Basantgarh area of Udhampur. One of those killed was identified as Avu Mavia, a top JeM commander who had been active in the area for several years, according to PTI.

Operation details

Rocket-propelled grenade rounds fired at cave hideout's entrance

A joint team of Jammu and Kashmir Police, CIF Delta (an elite Indian Army unit under the White Knight Corps), and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) carried out the operation. Sniffer dogs with cameras were used to locate the terrorists, who were prevented from breaking contact during intermittent firing throughout the night. Security forces fired rocket-propelled grenade rounds at the cave hideout's entrance, neutralizing both commanders.

Operation outcome

M4 rifles, AK-47s recovered from terrorists

The operation concluded successfully with the recovery of M4 rifles, AK-47s, and a large cache of ammunition from the terrorists. Sharing the update, the White Knight Corps wrote on X, "Contact with terrorists was established yesterday and since then, terrorists were prevented from breaking contact. Following a calibrated and coordinated response, two terrorists have been successfully neutralized."

Operation significant ahead of Shah's visit to J&K

The terrorists reportedly had plans to establish a base and stock supplies in the area. Their elimination has come as a relief to locals, especially after a special police official was killed on December 15. The operation is seen as a significant victory for security forces in their fight against terrorism, just hours before Union Home Minister Amit Shah's visit to Jammu and Kashmir for security review and developmental projects launch.
