What's the story

A seven-story under-construction building in Anjaiah Nagar, Hyderabad, collapsed on Saturday, leaving at least two people dead and several others injured. Rescue teams are currently working to clear the debris and rescue those who may be trapped underneath. The structure was being built on a 50-square-yard plot near a drain, per reports.

The collapsed building also damaged nearby structures. An adjacent apartment in Whitefield suffered major damage as debris fell on it.

A nearby hostel was evacuated as a precautionary measure after the incident.

Authorities are expected to investigate possible violations of building and safety norms. They will check if the building had the required permissions and if construction rules were followed.

Building did not have proper clearances: Congress MLA

Congress MLA Arekapudi Gandhi has alleged that the building did not have proper clearances and was under scrutiny before the collapse.

He said, "In Madhapur division, the illegal seven-storey under-construction building was stopped by officials for four months."

"They recently restarted the construction work illegally," he added.

Gandhi urged people to understand the risks of illegal constructions and said similar incidents had occurred in Serilingampally before.
