24 children die after taking toxic cough syrup in India

India

At least 24 kids have died in India after taking Coldrif cough syrup, which was found to contain a toxic chemical called diethylene glycol (DEG).
The syrup was made by Sresan Pharmaceutical Manufacturer, and this tragedy has put the spotlight back on drug safety in India, especially since similar incidents happened just a couple of years ago.

What's being done about it?

Authorities have revoked Sresan's manufacturing license and detained its founder.
Inspections uncovered unsanitary conditions and falsified records at their Chennai facility.
Two suppliers, Sunrise Biotech and Jinkushal Aroma, are also being scrutinized as part of the investigation after it was found they repackaged chemicals used in the syrup without the required licenses.
This incident has sparked big questions about how well medicines are regulated—and whether enough is being done to keep people safe.
