Delhi schoolboy's suicide sparks calls for action against teachers

India

A 16-year-old student from St Columba's School, Delhi, died by suicide on November 19, 2024, after jumping in front of a metro train.
In his note, he apologized to his family and named the headmistress and three teachers, accusing them of mental harassment and humiliation.
On the day of the incident, he was reportedly threatened by teachers for not performing a dance due to a sprained ankle, and he had also recently been threatened with expulsion.
His father said this mistreatment had been going on for some time.

Teachers suspended, investigation underway

Following the tragedy, the school suspended the four staff members named in the boy's note and FIR.
They're now barred from contacting students or staff without written approval. Police have registered an abetment to suicide case and are investigating.
Other students have also come forward about facing similar harassment, leading to protests outside the school.
The Delhi Education Department has set up a committee to look into both this incident and broader concerns about student treatment at the school.
