UP, Maharashtra no longer accept Aadhaar as proof of birth
What's the story
The Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra governments have issued orders to not accept Aadhaar cards as proof of date of birth. In UP, the Planning Department said, "Aadhaar cards will no longer be accepted as a birth certificate or proof of date of birth. The Planning Department has issued instructions to all departments. No birth certificate is attached to the Aadhaar card; therefore, it cannot be considered a birth certificate."
Maharashtra directive
Maharashtra cancels Aadhaar-based delayed birth certificates
Maharashtra has adopted an even stronger stance. The State Revenue Department has said that any birth certificates issued solely on the basis of Aadhaar after the August 2023 revision will be invalidated. 'The government has taken this decision to stop fake birth certificates and death certificates being used for illegal purposes. Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule has ordered the cancellation of all suspicious certificates issued using Aadhaar cards," the notification read.
Evidence clause
Aadhaar not admissible as evidence: Maharashtra notice
A 16-point verification guideline was also implemented to prevent fraudulent entries. The Maharashtra notice clearly states that Aadhaar "cannot be accepted as evidence in any subject or case." If discrepancies are found between Aadhaar details and the claimed date of birth, a police complaint must be filed. The state identified 14 regions with high numbers of unauthorized registrations for serious investigations. They include Amravati, Sillod, Akola, Sambhajinagar City, Latur, Anjangaon Surji, Achalpur, Pusad, Parbhani, Beed, Gevrai, Jalna, Ardhapur, and Parli.
Immigrant action
UP's crackdown on illegal immigrants
In UP, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered district magistrates to take strict action against illegal immigrants. The CM reiterated that law and order, national security, and social harmony are top priorities for his government. Temporary detention centers are to be set up in each district to house infiltrators until verification is complete. "Those...identified as illegal immigrants will be housed in the temporary detention facilities and will be deported to their respective countries following due legal procedure," the statement said.
