Akshay Kumar Singh was one of the convicts in the 2012 ‘Nirbhaya’ gang rape case, in which a 23-year-old physiotherapy intern was gang-raped on December 16, 2012, by Singh and his associates namely Mukesh Singh, Ram Singh, Vinay Sharma, Pawan Gupta, and a juvenile, in a moving bus in New Delhi. She succumbed to her injuries on December 29, 2012. The case sparked huge outrage globally. On December 21, 2012, Singh was arrested from his native Karmalahang village in Aurangabad, Bihar, and brought to Delhi. On March 11, 2013, Ram Singh died by suicide, and the same year in August, the juvenile was sent to three years of imprisonment. On September 10, 2013, Singh and the rest of his associates were charged with murder and a Delhi Court announced a death sentence to them. On March 13, 2014, the Delhi High Court confirmed the death penalty. On May 5, 2017, Supreme Court upheld the Delhi High Court’s decision of the death penalty to Singh and his associates. On December 2, 2019, Singh filed a review petition in the Supreme Court which was rejected by the apex court on December 18. On January 28, 2020, Singh again filed a curative petition in the Supreme Court, which was rejected by the apex court on January 30. On February 5, 2020, Singh’s mercy petition was rejected by President Ram Nath Kovind. On March 20, 2020, Singh and his associates were hanged to death at 5:30 am.
