Ashok Lavasa: News

Born on October 21, 1957, Ashok Lavasa is a retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Haryana Cadre and former Election Commissioner of India (January 2018 to August 2020). He made headlines during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections after he dissented against the election commission panel’s ruling of complaint against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah in the election campaign. The 1984 batch IAS officer has also served in various government positions including as the financial secretary of India, Environment, Forests and Climate Change Secretary of India, and Civil Aviation Secretary of India. As of 2021, he is serving as the Vice President of the Asian Development Bank. A literature graduate, Lavasa received his MBA from Southern Cross University, New South Wales. He taught literature at Delhi University and served as a probationary officer in the State Bank of India (SBI), before being appointed as an IAS officer. He has authored two books ‘An Uncivil Servant: The Success Story of a Bureaucrat Turned Businessman’ and ‘An Ordinary Life: Portrait of an Indian Generation.’
