Assam violence: 2 dead, CM Sarma monitoring situation
Tensions have flared in Assam's West Karbi Anglong, where protests over land rights turned deadly—two people lost their lives during the violence—one, a non-tribal man, was killed in a fire set by protesters, and the other, a protester, succumbed to injuries sustained in the unrest.
Things escalated when protesters set fire to the home of a local council leader, and more than 45 people, including police officers, were injured as violence spread.
Why does it matter?
This unrest is rooted in long-standing disputes over tribal and non-tribal land rights.
The government has stepped in with curfews, internet shutdowns, and extra security to prevent things from getting worse.
With counter-protests also happening, there are real worries about broader ethnic tensions flaring up.
Leaders are now pushing for talks to calm the situation and find a way forward for everyone involved.
