Bengal clash: Shop opening sparks violence in Maheshtala
Tensions flared in Maheshtala, West Bengal, when a Hindu temple was vandalized on Tuesday. The trouble began after locals stopped a group from setting up a shop near the temple, which quickly spiraled into stone-pelting and damage to the temple's property. The police station was just across the street but couldn't prevent things from getting out of hand.
Police officers injured, bike set on fire
As violence grew, stones and bricks were thrown at police officers from rooftops, leaving several injured. A police bike was set on fire during the clashes. Law enforcement tried to calm things down with lathi charges and tear gas but met strong pushback. Even after extra forces and the Rapid Action Force arrived, sporadic violence continued while locals protested. Police are working to restore order.
