Bengaluru residents push back against Supreme Court's stray dog removal order

India

On Tuesday, more than 250 people in Bengaluru gathered at Freedom Park to protest a Supreme Court order calling for the removal of stray dogs from places like schools and hospitals.
Protesters say the move goes against India's Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules, which allow sterilized and vaccinated dogs to stay in their home areas unless they are infected or suspected of rabies, or showing aggressive behavior.

Why does it matter?

Animal lovers and groups—including actor Aindrita Ray—warn that removing these dogs could actually make things worse.
If vaccinated dogs are taken away, unvaccinated strays might fill the gap, raising public health risks and undoing years of careful population control.
Protesters are urging authorities to stick with proven ABC programs that keep both people and animals safer.
