Bengaluru: Superstition sparks neighborhood clash

India

A simple ritual to ward off the evil eye in Bengaluru took a rough turn earlier this week.
After her granddaughter fell, Geeta Shankar threw an egg at a three-way junction near her home—a local tradition meant to keep away the evil eye.
But neighbor Hanumantayya B accused her of black magic and things quickly got heated, ending with Geeta and her husband Shankar being assaulted.

Superstition still runs deep—even in cities

Geeta reported the attack to police, who are now checking CCTV footage.
Hanumantayya fired back with his own complaint, saying these rituals happen often.
The whole episode highlights how superstitions can still cause big problems—even in urban neighborhoods.
In another case last year, a 25-year-old woman from Jalahalli lost ₹8.2 lakh to an astrologer promising "black magic" fixes, showing these beliefs are far from gone.
