Bibek Debroy: News
Bibek Debroy is an economist, author, Indologist, Sanskrit translator, and the Chairman of the Economic Advisory Council (EAC) to the Prime Minister of India. Born in Meghalaya, Debroy did his BA (Hons) in Economics from Presidency College, Kolkata, and Masters from the Delhi School of Economics. He pursued further studies at Trinity College, University of Cambridge. He has worked with some of the most prestigious financial institutions in the country and contributed articles to several esteemed publications. Former Director of the Rajiv Gandhi Institute for Contemporary Studies, he has previously served as a Consultant in the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance. Between 2015 and 2019, he served as a member of India’s premier policy think tank, NITI Aayog, and since 2017, has been the Chairman of the EAC to PM Narendra Modi. Besides being an author, Debroy is also a translator of many revered Sanskrit texts, including the Valmiki Ramayana, Bhagavata Purana, Bhagavad Gita, Markandeya Purana, and is only the third person to have translated the unabridged Mahabharata into English. He was honored with the Padma Shri in 2015.
