Calcutta High Court stays KMC polls after Dipu Das challenge
The Calcutta High Court has hit pause on the upcoming Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) elections after a big debate over how the city's wards are being redrawn.
Former councilor Dipu Das challenged the changes, saying they're based on electoral rolls rather than the actual population.
He also pointed out that the new notification was issued after the municipal body was dissolved in June.
Court bars State Election Commission notification
With these changes possibly bumping up Kolkata's wards from 144 to 209, things are at a standstill for now.
The court has told the State Election Commission not to issue a notification for the Kolkata Municipal Corporation election until Das's petition is disposed of by the single bench.
So KMC elections are on hold until the single bench disposes of the petition.
