CBI arrests Arup Das in Guwahati over Abhijit Sarkar murder
India
After nearly five years on the run, Arup Das (also known as Bapi Das) has been arrested by the CBI for his alleged role in the murder of West Bengal BJP leader Abhijit Sarkar.
The arrest happened in Guwahati on August 6, 2026, bringing a major breakthrough to a case that started during post-election violence in the State in 2021.
CBI charges 38 people
Das had a ₹50,000 reward on his head and had been on the run for almost five years.
The CBI took over the investigation after a Calcutta High Court order and has since charged 38 people, including Das and the then Trinamool MLA Paresh Pal.
Investigators say they relied on both tech and human intelligence to track down Das.
