CBIC probes Chennai Customs after importer accuses officials of harassment
India's top tax authority, the CBIC, is investigating claims of misconduct and irregularities at Chennai Customs after importer Wintrack Inc. accused officials of harassment, bribery demands, and delays that led them to cease operations in India.
The issue came to light through a Department of Revenue (DoR) report based on Wintrack's complaint.
CBIC has set up a task force for the probe
To keep things fair, all officers named in the inquiry have been transferred, and the customs broker's license has been suspended.
The CBIC wants answers within 4-6 weeks and has set up a Task Force to push for reforms like anonymous assessments and better grievance redressal—especially for MSMEs and small importers.
The investigation will also check if these problems are just one-off or signs of deeper issues in the system.
