What's the story

The Ministry of Civil Aviation has initiated a high-level probe into the ongoing disruption of IndiGo's flight operations. The investigation will look into what caused the issue at IndiGo, hold those responsible accountable, and suggest steps to ensure such disruptions don't happen again in the future. Union Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu said that "without compromising on air safety," this decision was taken in the interest of passengers who depend on timely air travel for essential needs.

Flight cancelations

IndiGo cancels hundreds of flights amid operational disruption

IndiGo, India's largest airline, canceled nearly 500 flights across major airports on Friday. All domestic departures from Delhi, the airline's biggest hub, have been canceled until midnight. The disruptions are also affecting other key airports such as Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai and Ahmedabad. The airline admitted that the disruptions arose "primarily from misjudgment and planning gaps" in implementing Phase 2 of the FDTL (Flight Duty Time Limitations) norms and sought an exemption from the pilot rest and duty norms.

Regulatory suspension

DGCA suspends flight duty time limitations orders

On Friday, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) placed its Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) orders on hold with immediate effect. The revised rules took effect from November 1. These rules increased the amount of mandatory rest per week for pilots from 12 to 48 hours. In addition, pilots were only allowed two nighttime landings per week, down from six. The ministry expects flight schedules to stabilize by Saturday and full restoration of services within three days.

Passenger support

Airlines directed to provide real-time updates and refunds

To assist passengers during this time, airlines have been asked to give regular updates through improved online information systems. This will allow travelers to check real-time flight status from home. In case of cancellations, airlines will provide full refunds automatically without any requests from passengers. Stranded travelers due to delays will be given hotel accommodations arranged by the airlines.

Priority services

Special assistance for senior citizens and differently-abled passengers

The Ministry has also announced special assistance for senior citizens and differently-abled passengers. They will be given lounge access and every possible help to ensure a comfortable travel experience. Refreshments and essential services will be provided to all affected passengers. A 24x7 Control Room has been set up by the Ministry to monitor the situation in real-time, ensuring swift corrective action and effective coordination.
