Chandni Chowk closes about 300 shops for Independence Day security
India
If you're heading to Chandni Chowk, heads up: about 300 shops along Chandni Chowk (between Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib and Red Fort) will be closed from August 12-15.
This move is part of tighter security plans for Independence Day, with police patrols and checks ramped up since early July.
Police use facial recognition cameras
After last year's Red Fort blast that sadly took 13 lives, authorities aren't taking any chances, so this time, nearly 300 shops along the 1-km stretch in Chandni Chowk between Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib and Red Fort will stay closed the whole four days instead of just during rehearsals.
Police are also doing random checks, using facial recognition cameras, and even working to prevent waterlogging near Red Fort to keep celebrations safe and smooth.
