Chikungunya cases surge in Sangrur, dengue cases drop: What's happening
India
After the recent floods, Sangrur district in Punjab is seeing a sharp rise in chikungunya—33 cases since July 2025, compared to zero last year.
Interestingly, dengue numbers have dropped this time: only 22 cases so far in 2025, down from 100 during the same period in 2024.
Health officials are on high alert
To deal with the spike, health officials are ramping up mosquito control with extra spraying and fogging around the district.
They're also reminding everyone to clear out standing water and take steps to avoid mosquito bites.
Testing numbers reveal a big shift
Both diseases can bring high fever and joint pain, but dengue is riskier due to possible bleeding issues.
Testing numbers show the shift too—360 chikungunya tests versus nearly 1,200 for dengue—highlighting how patterns are changing this year.
