Chinnakkanal elephant attack kills woman, injures son and divides leaders
India
After a recent elephant attack in Munnar's Chinnakkanal left a woman dead and her son injured, local leaders are split on what to do next.
Some, like DCC President C.P. Mathew and the CPI(M), think moving families out of danger is the way forward.
Others aren't so sure.
CPI opposes relocation, officials demand RRT
The CPI says families shouldn't have to leave their homes, especially since they have official land rights.
Instead, they want the problem elephants moved elsewhere.
CPI district secretary K. Salim Kumar even suggested that talk of relocation is just a cover for grabbing land.
Meanwhile, officials have raised a demand to establish a permanent RRT station at Chinnakkanal.
