The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall in several parts of Tamil Nadu as Cyclone Senyar is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal by November 27. The weather system, which will be named Senyar once it intensifies into a cyclonic storm, is expected to bring extremely wet conditions across the state for the next few days.

The IMD has predicted very heavy rainfall of 12-20cm in three delta districts on November 28. Seven districts, including Chennai, are likely to receive similar rainfall on November 29. Tiruvallur district is also under a heavy rain warning for November 30. In light of the forecasted weather conditions, authorities in Rameswaram have declared a holiday for schools on Wednesday.

Cyclone Senyar's formation and expected path

Cyclone Senyar is currently a deep depression over the Strait of Malacca, about 100km east of Kuta Makmur in Indonesia. It is centered at 5.0°N, 98.0°E as of November 26 morning. The system will maintain cyclonic storm intensity for the next 24 hours before moving west-southwestward and then recurving eastward over the next two days.

The IMD has also predicted heavy rainfall over Kerala and Mahe on November 25-26, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam from November 29-December 1, Rayalaseema from November 30-December 1, Andaman and Nicobar Islands from November 26-29. Thunderstorms with lightning are expected over Tamil Nadu, Kerala & Mahe, Lakshadweep, coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam & Rayalaseema, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

Flood situation

Flood-like situation in Thanjavur district due to heavy rainfall

In Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu, heavy rainfall has led to a flood-like situation. Waterlogging was also reported in parts of Thoothukudi, where electric pumps were used to clear the accumulated water. The IMD director S Stella said light to moderate rainfall is expected in coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema on November 29-30 due to the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal.
