At least 17 people have died in Darjeeling, West Bengal, due to heavy rainfall and landslides. The situation has also cut off road connectivity to Sikkim, a Himalayan state. Tourists in the region have been advised to stay where they are until police can evacuate them safely. The state headquarters and district authorities have set up 24x7 control rooms for assistance.

PM, President express grief over loss of lives
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu have also expressed their grief over the loss of lives in Darjeeling. Both leaders extended condolences to the victims' families and assured all possible assistance is being provided. Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke with local MP Raju Bista and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured in this tragic incident.

Tourist spots, toy train services suspended
As a result, the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration has closed tourist spots in Darjeeling as a precautionary measure. This includes popular destinations like Tiger Hill and Rock Garden.
