Delhi: Drunk woman-driver, headed to club, rams SUV, kills one
In yet another incident of rash driving, a 22-year-old drunk woman rammed into an SUV on Friday night in Delhi's Punjabi Bagh area, killing one. The accused, identified as Shivani Malik, was driving an S-cross and was going to a bar in Gurugram with her friends. She allegedly jumped a divider and collided with the SUV which was carrying a family.
Police said Vimal and Sudhir Sardana, with their wives and kids, were returning from a temple in Chhatarpur in their Mahindra Quanto car. At around 11 PM, when their vehicle reached a flyover adjacent to Punjabi Bagh flyover, a vehicle came from the opposite direction and hit them. Eyewitnesses said the speed of S-cross was so high it flew in the air after hitting the divider.
"Passersby stopped and helped the occupants of the cars get out. A PCR (police control room) call was then made and the police was informed," a police officer said. In the accident, Vimal's 38-year-old wife Poonam lost her life. His 13-year-old daughter is critical while his son suffered minor injuries. Sudhir, his wife Vandana, and kids Dhruv and Muskan, weren't hurt.
Malik, who is a resident of Mohan Nagar in Ghaziabad, works at a salon. At the time of the incident, three of her friends were in the car, but they fled. The prime accused was arrested from the spot and a case was registered. The family of the deceased lives in Indra Nagar society in Adarsh Nagar in North Delhi, reports said.
Deputy commissioner of police (west) Monika Bhardwaj said, "A case of causing death due to negligence, for rash and negligent driving, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and under other relevant sections has been registered at Punjabi Bagh police station."
